15 Most Photogenic Places in Georgia

KOTE Updated: 6 min read
Mtskheta and Jvari Monastery

Mountains, ancient monasteries and colourful towns — Georgia seems made for photography. Here are 15 places worth adding to your route.

Nature

1. Sataplia Cave. 7 km from Kutaisi: illuminated stalactites and stalagmites, plus real dinosaur footprints.

2. Abudelauri Lakes. Coloured lakes among cliffs and alpine meadows, 7 km from the village of Roshka. They are frozen from November to May, so go in summer — and don’t miss a panorama with the mountains.

3. Tusheti. A high-mountain region with ancient towers, open to visitors only a few months a year. You’ll need a 4×4, but the views are worth it — especially from a drone.

4. Makhuntseti waterfall and Queen Tamar’s bridge. A 20-metre waterfall and an old arched stone bridge in the mountains of Adjara, an hour from Batumi.

5. Racha. “Georgian Switzerland”: forests, mountains and silence. Perfect for drone shots.

Historic sites

6. Uplistsikhe. A cave town about 3,000 years old, inhabited until the 19th century. The best shot is a panorama of the cliff with its caves.

7. David Gareja. A 6th-century complex of cave monasteries among the striped hills of a semi-desert — a landscape that looks like another planet.

8. Jvari Monastery. The church above Mtskheta, celebrated by Lermontov. The viewpoint overlooks the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers.

9. Svan towers. Defensive towers from the 8th–13th centuries among the snowy peaks of Svaneti. Shoot them from above and up close.

10. Mirza Riza Khan’s house in Borjomi. A late-19th-century mansion of a Persian diplomat with a carved façade blending Georgian, European and Iranian styles.

11. Georgian Military Road. Ananuri fortress, Zhinvali Reservoir and the Friendship Monument with its mountain panorama — all on the way to Kazbegi.

Towns

12. Gabriadze clock tower. The tower of Rezo Gabriadze’s puppet theatre is a symbol of old Tbilisi with its fairy-tale, almost doll-house architecture.

13. Shardeni Street. A fashionable street in old Tbilisi with small restaurants and historic buildings.

14. Piazza Square, Batumi. Mosaics, stained glass and Italian flair — a great shot guaranteed.

15. Anaklia footbridge. A long pedestrian bridge between Anaklia and Ganmukhuri — a spot for sunset photos.

Many of these places are on our tour itineraries: you’ll see Jvari, Ananuri, the Friendship Monument, Gergeti and Sighnaghi with a guide.
